Description
This is a very rare advertising piece from the Nichols Bros. cutlery firm located in Greenfield, MA. The front of the piece is marked:Souvenir
Nichols Bros.
116 Wells St.
My research indicates this firm was started by Walter E. Nichols and his brother, J. Henry Nichols, in 1892. They formed the American Tap & Die Corporation in 1902. Then, in 1925, they combined with the Williamsburg Manufacturing Company to form the Threadwell Tool Company that was in existence until 1985. (Credit: Woody 73)
I just listed another 'custard glass' souvenir on Ebay that's dated 1903. Therefore, this piece more than likely pre-dates the brothers' founding of American Tap & Die in 1902. (I'm not sure if they discontinued using the Nichols Bros. name at that point).
Specifics:
Measures 2 3/8" tall.
No chips
Gold detailing on the rim has worn away
Inside has a diamond-shaped manufacturer's mark (Heisey Glass)
