Kentucky

Begins in 1634 with the eight original shires, continues through 1776 with
the first
county in present day
Kentucky
, and 1779 with the first county
in present day
West
Virginia
.
Dickenson was the last new Virginia county, formed 1880. (In 1920
Alexandria County
was renamed
Arlington County.)
It is interesting to note that
Virginia
has no
Jefferson
County
.
Jefferson
County Virginia
was formed 1780 from Kentucky Co., and is now part of KY.
After the state of
Kentucky
was formed in 1790, the second
Jefferson
County
was formed 1801 from
Berkeley
County
,
but became part of
West Virginia
in 1863.
Similarly,
Madison
County
,
Virginia
was formed 1785 from
Lincoln
County
,
and is now in
Kentucky
.
The second
Madison
County
was formed 1792
from
Culpepper
County
, and
remains part of
Virginia
.
